Shelter Cove Residents Face Tax Hike Proposal, Sports Court Update, and More

The Shelter Cove Resort Improvement District Board held its monthly meeting on August 21st, covering a range of topics impacting the community. Key decisions included the advancement of a ballot measure to increase a special tax and updates on local projects, alongside public comments reflecting community concerns and celebrations.

The most significant item on the agenda was a ballot measure proposing a $60 increase to the existing $80 special Utilities Improvement and Operations tax. The measure, slated for the June 2026 election, aims to address the district's operational needs. The board emphasized the potential benefits to the community and property values, noting that the measure would fail if a majority of affected property owners submit letters of protest. To ensure transparency, the board announced plans for town hall meetings to inform the public, with the first scheduled for August 28th at 6 p.m. Further details on these meetings are available at https://sheltercove-ca.gov/board/.

Positive progress was reported on the planned improvements to the local sports court. The Parks and Recreation Committee announced that revised plans had been approved by the county, paving the way for the project to enter the bidding phase. The committee also discussed community/evacuation centers and fundraising efforts, and will be making recommendations for new committee members at the next town hall meeting.

The meeting also included a significant portion dedicated to public comment. Linda Franklin announced the upcoming 11th Annual Quilt Show on September 30th at the Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse. Mark Wilson expressed gratitude to the fire department for their assistance during a recent tragedy. A resignation from the Parks and Recreation Committee was announced due to a conflict of interest involving golf course rentals. Finally, a representative from the Shelter Cove Property Owners Association voiced concern over the zero-dollar allocation for Shelter Cove roads, highlighting the community's significant tourism and the need for road improvements.

In routine business, the board unanimously approved the minutes from a previous meeting, following a correction, and approved the bills for July 2025. The Administration Department also provided an update on the mailing of public notices for the ballot measure, the implementation of new billing software ("Amsten"), and other ongoing activities, including the replacement of pressure transducers at the wastewater treatment plant.

Residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming town hall meetings to learn more about the proposed tax increase and to participate in the nomination process for the Parks and Recreation Committee.
