Eureka City Council Celebrates Disability Pride, Plans Carson Park Playground Upgrade
The Eureka City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, covering a range of topics impacting Eureka residents. Mayor Breuer and councilmembers Castellano, Molton, Bower, and Contreras-Loesch were present; Councilmember Fernandez was absent. The roughly 50-minute meeting, held in person at Eureka City Hall with remote Zoom participation, focused primarily on a Disability Pride Month proclamation and a significant playground upgrade project.
Councilmember Castellano read a proclamation recognizing July as Disability Pride Month, coinciding with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the upcoming Disability Pride Fest on July 19th. Public comments strongly supported the proclamation, with one attendee in a wheelchair sharing their personal experience with the ADA and expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming festival. Another resident voiced their support for the city's "Get Out and Play Day" event on July 26th, highlighting their role as an ally for individuals with disabilities.
The meeting also featured a presentation by the Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA) on the Carson Park playground improvement project, a collaborative effort with the Kiwanis club. The presentation detailed plans for a new playground design, with a fundraising goal of $150,000 and a volunteer build scheduled for Spring/Summer 2026. A map showcasing the various locations and activities planned for "Get Out and Play Day" was also presented.
While the meeting included enthusiastic public participation and informative presentations, no formal votes or resolutions were taken on either agenda item. One public commenter offered a non-agenda item, sharing a poem about the situation in Gaza and urging the council to send letters to CalPERS.
The next steps for the Carson Park playground project involve securing the necessary funds and organizing the community volunteer build.
