Humboldt Planning Commission Delays Decisions on Subdivision, McKinleyville Town Center

The Humboldt County Planning Commission's August 21st meeting saw several agenda items continued to the next meeting, including a subdivision extension and a discussion on the McKinleyville Town Center. Concerns regarding McKinleyville traffic and infrastructure were raised by a resident.

The Humboldt County Planning Commission held a hybrid meeting on August 21st, addressing several key issues impacting the community. While some items were swiftly approved, others, notably a subdivision extension and aspects of the McKinleyville Town Center plan, were continued to the next meeting on September 4th.

Commissioners Noah Levy (presiding), Thomas Mulder, Peggy ONeill, Jerome Quiriazi, and Lorna McFarlane, along with Planning & Building Director John Ford, were in attendance. Commissioners Scavdoal and West were absent. The meeting, lasting approximately 58 minutes, covered routine approvals, public comments, and important policy discussions.

One significant item was the 25-1004 Santos Subdivision Extension, requesting a two-year extension for a previously approved project. After discussion and a motion to continue to the September 4th meeting to allow for public comment, the commission voted 4-1 to delay the decision. The commission also continued discussion of a Conditional Use Permit Modification for Ridgefield Events to the same date.

McKinleyville resident Mike Novack voiced concerns about the impact of new subdivisions on his community. He specifically highlighted the lack of median maintenance, increased traffic on School Road, and the absence of safe turning lanes, creating hazardous conditions for residents. These concerns prompted discussion among the commissioners regarding potential changes to the McKinleyville Community Plan, focusing on improved transportation and pedestrian/bicycle connectivity, and clarifying the definition of wetlands within the plan.

The commission unanimously approved the August 7th Action Summary and other consent calendar items. The upcoming September 4th meeting will be crucial for addressing the continued items, allowing for further public input and deliberation. The McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee will also meet on August 27th to discuss related matters.
