Trinidad Planning Commission Approves Church Conversion Project with Conditions

The Trinidad Planning Commission met on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, addressing several key agenda items, most notably approving a project to convert a church and a two-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom residence and a one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit. The meeting, which lasted approximately 25 minutes, was attended by Chair Richard Johnson, Commissioners Roland Johnson and Dale Slay, staff member Trevor Parker, and City Clerk Nina (via video conference). Commissioners Tristan Cole and Aaron Hakenen were absent.

The commission's primary focus was the public hearing and subsequent decision on the church conversion project. Staff member Trevor Parker presented an overview of the project, noting some complicating factors, primarily the presence of a remnant drainage channel (wetland) and the need for a design review due to the exterior modifications. Despite these considerations, the project was deemed straightforward enough for approval, subject to conditions outlined in the final decision. The commission unanimously approved the project.

Other matters discussed included the approval of the meeting's agenda and a postponement of the vote on the minutes from the June 18th meeting. This postponement stemmed from Commissioner Richard Johnson's abstention and the absence of two commissioners. The City Clerk, Nina, also provided an update, confirming that loose chickens previously reported in the street had been removed by wild animals.

Mr. Parker also mentioned ongoing work on the city's safety element and zoning updates, along with a memorandum of understanding with the county environmental health office. Looking ahead, the commission identified five items for future meetings, which include annexation issues.
