Blue Lake Public Safety Commission Addresses Transparency Concerns, Plans for Safety Fair

The Blue Lake Public Safety Commission held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 2nd, addressing several key issues, including concerns about transparency and upcoming community events. The meeting, attended by Commissioners Adaline Jones, Ted Hales, Donald Chang, and Alex Ricca, saw lively discussion and public participation.

One prominent concern raised by resident Kent Sowatski revolved around the commission's processes. Sowatski expressed concerns about a perceived lack of transparency and integrity, citing the shifting of agenda items and inconsistent appointment of a recording secretary. He also highlighted a safety hazard at the local skate park, noting that "about half of the fence around the skate park was gone." He requested that the commission address this issue at a future meeting.

The issue of a recording secretary proved to be a recurring theme. After discussion, Alex Ricca was appointed to fulfill this role for the September 2nd meeting. The commission also approved the minutes from its August 4th meeting.

Undersheriff J.D. Bro of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department provided a check-in on the department's activities in Blue Lake. The frequency of these check-ins currently monthly was debated, but ultimately the commission voted to maintain the existing monthly schedule.

In a positive development for the community, the commission confirmed plans for a Public Safety Fair scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. A follow-up meeting on August 11th at noon will focus on finalizing the details of this event.

Another resident, Theresa Sowatski, thanked Undersheriff Bro for his presence and information, while suggesting that future meetings consider a Zoom option to enhance accessibility.

While some concerns regarding transparency were voiced, the commission demonstrated responsiveness to public input. The commission plans to address the skate park fence issue and revisit the inclusion of all four agencies on future meeting agendas. The upcoming Public Safety Fair promises to be a valuable opportunity for community engagement.
