Arcata Planning Commission Approves CIP Updates, Schedules Joint Study Session

The Arcata Planning Commission held its regular meeting on June 10, 2025, covering a range of topics impacting the community. The approximately 13-minute meeting, conducted in a hybrid format, saw unanimous approval of key agenda items and announcements of upcoming events.

The meeting began with a land acknowledgement recognizing the Wiyot Tribe's ancestral connection to the land. Following this, the Commission swiftly approved the minutes from the May 13th meeting. The bulk of the discussion centered on Resolution PC-25-03, which involved adopting updates to the 2025-2026 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to align with the Arcata 2045 General Plan.

Commissioners engaged in a discussion about bicycle improvements planned for 11th and K Streets, specifically questioning their prioritization within the CIP and the potential impact of shifting funding from Washington. City staff clarified that project details remain in the planning phase, and prioritization depends on funding availability and deadlines. Despite these questions, the resolution passed unanimously.

City Engineer David Case announced a significant upcoming event: a joint study session on June 30th at 5:30 PM. This session will involve the City Council, the Arcata Fire District, and the Planning Commission, focusing on the results of a recently completed standards of coverage study. Commissioner Leeman also announced his absence from the next Planning Commission meeting.

No members of the public offered comments during the open comment period. The next Planning Commission meeting will be held on the scheduled date, with the details of the time and location available on the City of Arcata website. The public is encouraged to attend meetings and participate in the process. The June 30th joint study session is open to the public and will provide an important opportunity for residents to learn more about the standards of coverage study and its implications for Arcata. Further details on this study will be available closer to the date of the session.
