Arcata City Council Approves Peace, Pride, and Progress: SAMSIP Moves Forward
The Arcata City Council convened its regular meeting on September 3, 2025, covering a range of topics from celebrating peace and inclusivity to advancing crucial infrastructure projects. The meeting, which included both in-person and virtual participants, saw the approval of several proclamations and a detailed update on the South Arcata Multimodal Safety Improvement Plan (SAMSIP).
The meeting opened with a land acknowledgement recognizing the Wiyot Tribe as the original inhabitants of the land. This acknowledgement, according to the council, serves to address the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples and work towards reconciliation. Councilmember Stacy Atkinson Salazar read a proclamation declaring September 21st as the International Day of Peace, encouraging community efforts to combat conflict and promote understanding. Linda Evans of the Humboldt Women's International League for Peace and Freedom accepted the proclamation and announced events planned for the day, including a table at the North Country Fair and a film screening at the Minor Theater. Similarly, proclamations recognizing September as Community Unity Pride & Peace Month and Queer Community and Culture Awareness Month were approved, with Ken Hammock of Community Pride & Peace and April of Redwood Pride offering insights into their organizations' work and upcoming events.
Michael Winkler, chair of the Arcata Energy Committee, presented the committee's annual report, highlighting their efforts in environmental sustainability, including transitioning to renewable energy sources and working with the Redwood Coast Energy Authority on greenhouse gas reduction. The council expressed gratitude for the committee's contributions.
City Engineer Nitra Cadre provided an extensive update on the SAMSIP, a plan designed to enhance safety, connectivity, and aesthetics in South Arcata while reducing reliance on cars. While no formal decisions were made at this meeting, the council reviewed a draft implementation schedule with an anticipated completion date of December 2029 or possibly 2030. The council expressed strong support for the project and requested a copy of the presentation. Public comment on the SAMSIP will be heard at a future meeting.
In summary, the Arcata City Council's September 3rd meeting showcased a commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and community improvement. The progress on the SAMSIP signals a significant step towards enhancing the quality of life for Arcata residents.
