Shelter Cove Resort Improvement District Plans Sports Complex, Parcel Tax Increase
The Shelter Cove Resort Improvement District (SCRID) Parks & Recreation Committee held a meeting on June 26th, addressing several key issues impacting the community. While the video recording of the meeting suffered from some audio and video quality issues, several important decisions were made.
Sports Complex Plans Advance, Funding Remains a Key Issue
Revised plans for a new sports complex, submitted by volunteer project manager Mike Bruno, were a central topic. The proposed complex includes one basketball court and two pickleball courts. Due to budgetary constraints, the board voted to seek bids for construction with the option of building only one type of court initially, allowing for future expansion if funding permits. The county building department has already approved the general design and structural components. The committee also discussed fundraising options, with positive community feedback reported on surveys. A significant proposal involves a parcel tax increase from $80 to $140 per year. This increase will be subject to a public hearing at the August board meeting, with a vote scheduled for June 2nd, 2026. A two-thirds majority of registered voters is required for the tax increase to pass.
Subcommittees Formed to Tackle Strategic Plan Initiatives
The committee also dedicated considerable time to the formation of subcommittees to address various aspects of the SCRID strategic plan. The newly formed subcommittees and their members include: Trails (Tasha Machin and one other member to be determined); Beach Access (Wendy Ball and one other member to be determined); Parks (Laura Ball); Fourth of July (Sammy and one other member to be determined); Arts and Ecotourism (Sammy and Wendy Ball); and Fundraising (Sammy and Wendy Ball). These subcommittees will conduct research and development in their assigned areas and report back at the next meeting.
Airport Reorganization
In another significant decision, the board voted to remove the airport from the Parks and Recreation department and place it under an administrative department. The rationale, as stated by the board, was that the airport's unique regulatory and transportation requirements make it a less suitable fit within the Parks and Recreation structure.
Upcoming Meetings and Citizen Involvement
The next town hall meeting is scheduled for August 28th. The August board meeting will also include a public hearing on the proposed parcel tax increase. Residents are encouraged to attend the August meetings to voice their opinions on the proposed tax increase and other matters before the board.
