Rio Dell City Council Approves Street Art, Public Recycling Bins
Rio Dell residents will soon see new public art and improved recycling infrastructure, following the August 19th Rio Dell City Council meeting. The meeting, which was a hybrid format with both in-person and remote attendees, saw unanimous approval on several key agenda items, including a local artists street art proposal and the installation of public garbage and recycling cans on Davis Street.
The council, comprised of Mayor Debra Garnes, Councilmembers Robert Orr, Ananda Carter, Shane Wilson, and Willard, along with city staff, addressed a range of topics in a roughly 25-minute session. The meeting began with a swift 5-0 approval of the consent calendar, the details of which were not specified in the video recording.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on a proposal by local artist Mahela Brusard for a street art project. Brusard presented her vision, which includes smaller-scale projects throughout the city, specifically highlighting utility boxes on the Scotia Bridge. Her proposal included examples of her previous work and emphasized the potential to involve local youth. The council enthusiastically approved the project concept, with a 5-0 vote. The city manager noted that an invoice for the project's cost-share is expected sometime in September.
Another key discussion centered on the placement of public garbage and recycling cans at 44/64 Davis Street. While an unnamed resident voiced concerns regarding potential issues with proper disposal and recycling, ultimately advocating for a multi-step process and collaboration with Humboldt County, the council voted 5-0 to move forward with the installation. The city manager indicated that discussions with Humboldt County regarding the placement have been ongoing. The council also noted that the city is currently re-amping their joint powers agreements through Redwood.
In addition to the key agenda items, the council announced several upcoming community events, including a Redwood Empire Division meeting in Fortuna on August 27th, a blood drive at the Rio Dell Community Resource Center on August 27th (11 am to 5 pm), and a Touch-a-Truck event at the Fire Hall on September 6th (11 am to 1 pm).
