Trinidad Planning Commission Addresses Trail Repairs and Local Coastal Plan Update

The Trinidad Planning Commission held its February 19th meeting, focusing on the future of the Van Wick Trail, approval of a new garage project, and the ongoing update of the Local Coastal Plan (LCP). Key decisions included the re-election of commission leadership and the unanimous approval of a garage project at 500 West Trinity Street.

The Trinidad Planning Commission convened on February 19th for their monthly meeting, addressing several key issues impacting the community. While the minutes from the previous meeting were unavailable, the commission moved forward with its agenda, focusing heavily on the status of local trails and the ongoing Local Coastal Plan (LCP) update.

Commission Chair Aaron Hakenen and Vice Chair Richard Johnson were unanimously re-elected. Trevor Parker was also appointed to the Trails Committee. This committee will likely play a critical role in addressing concerns raised regarding the Van Wick Trail, which was closed in December. Although the closure order expired, a sign indicating no coastal access remains. Commissioners and staff discussed the possibility of further repairs or a permanent closure, with a custom aluminum staircase being considered as a potential solution. The city engineering department and a member of the ancestral society have already conducted a site assessment.

Another significant item on the agenda was a proposal for a new garage at 500 West Trinity Street. The project, located in the planned development zone, received unanimous approval. Commissioners confirmed the project met all required setbacks and posed no threat to views or areas of geologic hazard.

A joint meeting between the City Council and the Planning Commission is scheduled for a future date, along with updates on the LCP. Commissioners emphasized the ongoing efforts to update the LCP, noting that further information will be presented at the upcoming March meeting. The commission will also continue to explore solutions for the Van Wick and Axtell Memorial Trails.

The next Trinidad Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for March 19th, 2025. Residents interested in learning more about the LCP update or other ongoing projects can find meeting agendas and minutes online at https://trinidad.ca.gov/document.
