Blue Lake Economic Development Commission Tackles Battery Project, Business Outreach
The Blue Lake City Economic Development Commission met on April 8th, 2025, addressing key issues impacting the community. While the meeting video suffered from poor quality, several significant topics emerged, including a large-scale battery energy storage system and initiatives to support local businesses.
The meeting, attended by three commissioners and at least one other individual whose role was unclear, covered a range of agenda items. The commission unanimously approved both the meeting agenda and the minutes from their February 11th meeting.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a 20-megawatt battery energy storage system project. Commissioners discussed community questions and concerns regarding the projects size, location, and safety protocols, although no formal decisions were made at this meeting. The commission plans to continue updating the public on the projects progress and will continue working with the Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA).
In terms of business development, the commission discussed outreach strategies to welcome new businesses to Blue Lake. They highlighted the recent opening of a tattoo parlor on May 1st and noted the presence of a cannabis dispensary in nearby Arcata. The commission also plans to work with the city council to create recommendations on a cannabis ordinance and to reach out to the local brewery to discuss the ordinance further. Furthermore, the commission expressed their commitment to supporting existing businesses, including the Makers Space.
Looking ahead, the commission intends to continue developing a visioning/strategic plan for Blue Lake. They also announced several upcoming community events, including a Blue Lake Paddle Club event on the weekend of May 11th and a bingo night at Crash Hall in May. Planning for Fourth of July and Memorial Day celebrations is also underway.
While no public comments were received during the meeting, the commission actively addressed community concerns about the battery energy storage system. The commission emphasized their commitment to transparency and providing updates on all projects.
