Blue Lake Parks & Rec Commission Charts Course for Bike Park, Annie & Mary Day

The Blue Lake Parks and Recreation Commission recently met to discuss upcoming events and projects, including a three-phase bike and skate park development and preparations for Annie and Mary Day. Key decisions were made regarding project timelines and community engagement.

The Blue Lake Parks and Recreation Commission held a meeting (date unspecified, video recorded June 4, 2025) packed with updates on community projects and events. The approximately 38-minute meeting, attended by commissioners (including Patina and Jan), Parks and Recreation staff (including Emily Creech, and at least two others), and members of the public, covered a wide range of topics.

Among the significant items addressed was the highly anticipated three-phase bike and skate park project. Justin Wayler provided updates emphasizing the project's phased implementation, noting the importance of community involvement and highlighting its potential economic benefits through community partnerships. Concerns were raised by Kevin, who emphasized the need for inclusivity in the park's design, advocating for the consideration of all community members, including women and people of color, and expressing concern about the lack of Blue Lake representation on the project's map. A community presentation about the bike park is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18th, at 6:30 pm at the Crescent City Community Center. The commission aims to complete the first phase, including addressing drainage issues, by July 11th.

The commission also discussed preparations for Annie and Mary Day, focusing on the Parks and Recreation booth and volunteer recruitment. The meeting also saw the introduction of John Sowatski as the new representative for the Parks and Recreation Commission, filling the vacancy left by Chris Fryer. His appointment will be temporary until a permanent replacement is found.

In addition to the major projects, the commission announced upcoming events, including Open Mic and Jam Night (Wednesdays, 6-8 pm), adult skate nights (Thursdays, 7-9 pm), and summer camps starting June 16th. The meeting concluded with routine business, including the unanimous approval of the agenda and the minutes from the April 2025 meeting.

The next regular meeting of the Blue Lake Parks and Recreation Commission is scheduled for July 2nd. For more information on the commission, including agendas and minutes, visit https://bluelake.ca.gov/city-council/council-commissions/parks-recreation-commission/.
